Middle school students Aly Calmas, Toby Platt, Eli Baruchin, Krishan Bhakta, Nathan Kriegel, Matthew Niessen, and Ethan Zhang competed in the National TEAMS competition. Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science (TEAMS) is an annual competition for middle and high school students designed to help them discover their potential for engineering. The competition was held from 6/22-6/25 in Atlanta as part of the national Technology Student Association conference.
The TEAMS competition is a multifaceted challenge. To qualify, the group had to write an essay on LEED certification, take a test on applied math concepts, and complete a building challenge. The team competed in the state level testing at NJIT in March. They ranked second in the state for schools of all size and first nationally in schools of a similar size to HCS. At the national competition, the team had to give a prepared presentation on an innovative transportation infrastructure, prepare a video advertising themselves as an engineering firm, and complete an onsite building challenge. The team ranked in the top 10 nationally for their prepared presentation.
