Make-A-Difference
Day 2007
On this national day of helping others, each class plans and executes a
project for the last Friday in October that will make a difference in
someone’s life within the local and/or national communities. This school
year has put forth a wide array of projects ranging from a Penny Harvest
program, to adopting Spanish-speaking grandparents and building
inter-generational friendships via English-Spanish dialogues, to the
creation of literacy programs and sharing with the Connor School, to the
development of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” campaigns, to an ongoing “Food
For Thought” program created as a supplemental effort to stock the local
food banks and pantries with “green” and healthier food options by
working with local vendors throughout the year… AND all of these
projects are not add-ons to the curriculum but infused into our
classroom studies, because at HCS “service learning is not a thing to
teach, but a way to teach.” These initiatives and many more will be
celebrated in a school-wide assembly on Monday, Oct. 29th at 1:30 PM in
the Demarest Auditorium, and will be complimented by a performance by
the “Puppets for Peace” class who are practicing peace advocacy in the
tradition of the Bread and Puppet Theater. Other projects throughout the
year will be the creation of school murals, the adoption of an
endangered species, Holocaust awareness programs, character education
activities, landmine awareness and advocacy, as well as our yearly MLK
events and Empty Bowls fundraiser to serve and support Hoboken’s
homeless population.
