would like to congratulate everybody involved in the talent show for a
spectacular performance! I couldn't have been more happy with all the hard
work, dedication and talent our wonderful Hoboken Charter School displayed that
great night! And a huge thank you to my partner in crime, Viv, for making

Please note the new added rehearsal time which will be 1:15 - 2:00 on
Wednesdays. The schedule will be rotating around each week so that students
aren't missing a class every week. This is also to allow both the middle school
and beginner band to rehearse each week, there are just not enough days to get
all these rehearsals in each week! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Congrats to the
beginner band for their amazing first concert last Friday!
As this trimester
is coming to a close, we will be having our 2nd trimester playing tests next
week (week of 3/15 - 3/19). There are no surprises, the playing test is based on
material that we have been working on the entire trimester. In general, I will
be evaluating based on the following criteria:
1. Correct notes - pitch accuracy
2. Correct rhythms
3. Articulation and dynamics
4. Proper posture and fingerings
5. Musicality - their ability to make music and 'feel' what they are playing
* Students will not be evaluated based on tempo, they may take each song or
scale as slow or as fast as they wish, they should find a tempo that is most
comfortable for them without making a mistake.
Here are the requirements for each group: (based on 100 points)
Beginner band - includes all 4th graders and beginner middle school students:

Clarinets and Trumpets - C, D, E, F, G, A, G, F, E, D, C 20 pts

The MLK Sing Out
for Justice concert is coming up in a little over a week! There is a lot
do and prepare for in this little amount of time..By now, all parents and
students involved in healing choir, middle school concert band and jazz band
should have received the permission slip and schedule for MLK. Here is a

The middle school concert band will be performing at the MLK celebration on
Monday, January 18th, along with the jazz band. I will be sending another e-mail
in the near future for those students involved in jazz band. If your child is
not in the artsbridge morning class or the after school jazz band program, they
are not signed up for jazz band this trimester.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! I could not be more proud of all my amazing kids for
their performance at the holiday concert here at HCS! You guys truly rock!
Tomorrow the
jazz band has their performance at the assisted living home in Jersey City.
We will be leaving at 11:30 AM and returning around 2:00 PM. Remember to
bring instruments and dress in concert attire!

Welcome to
the new website for music at Hoboken Charter School! On this
site, you will find general information as well as important
updates, upcoming events, calendars, and some useful links!
Updates will always be posted at the top of the page, and the more

Middle School Concert Band: This ensemble is open to all students in
grades 5-8 who have studied an instrument or are planning on
beginning a new instrument. New students will need to attend
beginner group lessons for the first few months in order to prepare
for entering the middle school concert band. Band will take place on
one or two weekdays from 12:30 – 1:15. Early morning rehearsals will
occur occasionally.
Beginner Concert Band: Beginner band is open to all 4th grade
students and middle school students. The band will rehearse one or
two weekdays from 12:30-1:15, starting in January.
Jazz Band: Membership is open to all middle school students who play
an instrument. 4th grade students will have an opportunity to
audition for jazz band in the second trimester, after they have
practiced their instruments for a few months. Jazz band will meet on
Tuesdays from 3:15 – 4:45 for the first trimester. Jazz band
rehearsals may also take place during the Artsbridge elective time
from 8:40 – 9:30, depending on the trimester. Check calendars for
updates on this ensemble.
Chamber Ensembles: Students who wish may decide to play in small
chamber groups that will meet before school. Examples of these
ensembles are trumpet choir, saxophone quartet, woodwind choir, etc.
These groups will be decided based on student interest.
Instructional Lessons: All band members receive one instructional
group lesson per week. Schedules will be posted in the music room
and monthly calendars will be sent home.
Auditions: Auditions for chair placements are held twice each school
year (October and January). Specific requirements and procedures
will be posted in the music room.
Equipment Needs: Each learner must bring to class everyday: a
sharpened pencil, their instrument, and their music folder
(including their lesson book and assigned music). They must also
bring a good attitude!

Middle School Choir - Membership is open
to students in grades 5-8. We meet before school from 7:55 AM
- 8:30 AM. on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Music Theory - Offered in middle school
during various times of the year.
